The Provost

The Provost, Center for Strategic Research and Studies (CSRS) - DR Istifanus Zabadi B.Sc (ABU), M.Sc (Lond), PhD (Lond) 

Dr Zabadi is presently the Provost of the Centre for Strategic Research and Studies, National Defence College, Abuja Nigeria. His tertiary education began at the School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1975-76. He was then absorbed into the Department of Political Science where he graduated with a B.Sc with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in Political Science in 1979. Dr Zabadi had his post graduate training at the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London, where he obtained his M.Sc (1982) and PhD (1992) all in International Relations. He has  been a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Jos (1984 – early 1997). He was  also Commonwealth Scholar at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he obtained his doctorate  in International Relations. He taught at the Extra Mural Studies Department of Berbeck College, University of London (1990/91)


Between 1994 and 1996, he worked  with the defunct National Council for Intergovernmental  Relations (NCIR) where  he acted under several  capacities including  as Special Assistant to the Director-General/Chief Executive, and Director of Administration  and Research. He also served on a panel of international experts to the workshop on Institutionalizing of Governmental Relations, organized by the Centre fir Constitutional Analysis, Human Sciences Research council, Pretoria, South Africa in 1995. He was a member of the Nigerian delegation to the second OAU Chiefs of Defence Staff summit in Harare, Zimbabwe, October 1997.  Dr Zabadi was a Commissioner for Education in Adamawa  State, Nigeria from 1997 – 1999.


He is also a  member of  the Nigerian Political  Science Association, Nigerian Society  of International Affairs and the Institute  of Governance  and Social Research. He has been involved  in a number of networks on Research and Training in the area of Peace Support Operations. Prominent among these are: the International Forum on the Challenges of Peace Operations into the 21st  Century; the African Peace Support Trainers Association, and the West African Network on Security and Democratic Governance.  He was a Participant on the pioneer course for Senior UN Mission Leaders course, organized by the UNDPKO and National Defence College, Nigeria in April 2005.


He also has to his credit scholarly publications in both national and international journals and books. Prominent among which are : The African Crisis Response Initiative: Issues and Perspective (2003) which he edited with TA Imobighe; The Regional Dimension of Peace Operations (2004) which he edited with AG Adedeji; the Military and Management  of Internal Conflict in Nigeria (2005) co-edited with AG Adedeji; and Peace Support Operations in the New Global Environment: The Nigerian Perspective (2009) co-edited with GJ Jonah. His current areas of research interest include International Security, Peacekeeping, Conflict Studies and International Political Economy.  Dr Zabadi is married with 4 children. His hobbies include Sports and Community Development.
