The National Defence College Nigeria, since inception has had 25 Deputy Commandants and Directors of Studies . The incumbent Deputy Commandant assumed the position of leadership in the College on 18 January 2018. Major General Peter John Dauke took over from Major General Ede Gabriel Ode.
Major General Peter John Dauke was born on 8 February 1964 in Kaduna. He hails from Zangon-Kataf Local government area of Kaduna State. He enlisted into the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of Regular Combatant Course 35 on 19 January 1984 and was commissioned on 20 December 1986 as 2nd Lieutenant into the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps.
He has attended various courses including the Young Officers Course, Armour Tank Weapon Instructors, VBL Weapon Instructors, Junior and Senior Staff Courses, Company Commanders Course (Armour), all in Nigeria and the National Defence College Bangladesh. He attended the Rules of Engagement Workshop, Roundtable Conference on Global Violence and the Course for Directors of Courses and Trainers on International Humanitarian Law SANREMO-ITALY. He also participated at the National Disaster Management Course organized by Bournemouth University United Kingdom and participated at the Strategic Communications Workshop at the National Defence College Abuja. He also attended the Executive Management Course at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria.
Some of the appointments he has held in the Army, he was a Senior Instructor Weapons Armour School, Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, Commanding Officer 212 Tank Battalion, Assistant Director Guns-Defence Headquarters, Deputy Director Welfare Services Army Headquarters, Deputy Commandant Armour School, Directing Staff at the National Defense College Nigeria and Acting Commander Nigerian Army Training Centre Kontangora. The last 2 appointments he held before becoming Deputy Commandant are General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Jos and General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Lagos.
Maj Gen Dauke, is also a recipient of several awards; amongst them are; Pass Staff Course Dagger, Fellow Defence College Dagger, Forces Service Star, Meritorious Service Star and Distinguish Service Star. He was recognized by the Department of Psychology at the University of Ibadan as an Ambassador of Psychology in the Nigerian Army.
Schools and educational qualifications attained by the General include; Army Children School, Commilla Barracks 44 Kaduna, 1971-77, Rimi (St John’s) College Kaduna, 1978-83. Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna, 1984-86. University of Ibadan, 1990-93, BSc (Hons) Psychology. Others are University of Maiduguri 2005/2006 Master in Industrial and Labour Relations, University of Maiduguri 2007-2008 Post Graduate Diploma in Strategic Studies, International Institute of Humanitarian Law Sanremo-Italy in April 2010- Diploma in Refugee Law and Master of Philosophy in Refugee Law, Master of Philosophy in Strategy and Development Studies Bangladesh University of Professionals 2011. Some of his published articles in the Nigerian army Magazine include: “Application of Rules of Engagement in Internal Security Operations and Low Intensity Conflicts”, “Child-Soldiers in Contemporary Armed Conflicts: A Call for Action”, “Collective Bargaining in the Context of Positive Industrial Relations”, “The Chaplaincy and Military Discipline in the Nigerian Army” and “The Soldier and Psycho-Social Drugs: The Role of Chaplain”.
