NDC Holds Foreign...

The National Defence College (NDC) in Collaboration with Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria held a roundtable on Nigeria and her neighbours. The Roundtable took place at the NDC Auditorium. The Roundtable attracted participants from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Office of the Vice President, Armed Forces, Nigeria Police, Defence Intelligence Agency and other agencies as well as relevant stakeholders on the subject matter.

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama who was represented by Amb Ibrahim Rabiu while delivering the keynote address entitled, Nigeria’s Foreign Policy and her Immediate Neighbours, asserted that considering the current happenings in Nigeria, the Roundtable and its selected theme was apt. He disclosed that, Nigeria and her neighbours had since agreed on the fact that peace and security are fundamental for cordial co-existence between neighbouring countries. He added that there are many other border related security threats confronting Nigeria and neighbouring countries. These threats he mentioned include, smuggling, irregular migration, human trafficking and amongst others.


Similarly, Amb Oladapo Fafowora, the President Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria while giving his remarks reiterated that the choice of the topic and timing for the Roundtable could be adjudged appropriate considering the occurrences within the Nigerian immediate neighbouring countries and beyond that impinges on National Security and development of over dear nation. He emphasized, that the troubling situations in the Gulf of Guinea arising from the menace of piracy, increasing trans-border crimes such as smugglings of prohibited items including arms and ammunition is alarming. He concluded that all these menaces constitute challenge to Nigeria and should be addressed decisively.


The Commandant NDC, Rear Admiral Adeniyi Osinowo while making his remarks revealed that the main objective of the Roundtable was to review the trends and dynamics associated with Nigeria’s relation with her immediate neighbours with the views to suggesting credible foreign policy recommendations and proffer relevant policy options and strategies to guide Nigeria’s relations with her immediate neighbours.
