Commandant, National Defence College Leads Strategic Engagements in Brunei Darussalam
As part of the ongoing Geo-Strategic World Study Tour for Course 33 of the National Defence College (NDC), Nigeria, the Commandant, Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, is leading high-level strategic engagements in Brunei Darussalam. The visit aligns with the College’s academic mandate of exposing participants to diverse global strategic environments and best practices that contribute to national development and security.
The programme commenced with a symbolic brisk walk at the scenic Sultan Golden Jubilee Park, reflecting Brunei’s warm hospitality and the spirit of international camaraderie. This was followed immediately by a visit to the Brunei Energy Hub, where the Commandant and members of the delegation were taken through a comprehensive overview of the nation’s energy architecture, its strategic role in national development, and Brunei’s approach to balancing sustainability with economic growth. The engagement offered valuable insights into institutional coordination within the energy sector—an area of significant relevance to Nigeria’s own economic transformation agenda.
A key highlight of the visit was the strategic engagement at the Defence Academy of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF). The Commandant and his team were warmly received by the Deputy Commandant, Lieutenant Colonel Ameerul Adli. The visit featured a series of detailed briefings on critical aspects of Brunei’s defence and security framework, including the organisational structure of the Ministry of Defence, regional security dynamics, the national Defence White Paper, and the conduct of Joint Operations. These were complemented by robust discussion sessions, fostering knowledge exchange and deeper mutual understanding between both institutions.
The delegation also toured the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Museum, gaining historical context and strategic perspective on the evolution of Brunei’s military capability and defence policy. In his remarks, Rear Admiral Olotu expressed profound appreciation for the warm reception and professional engagements. He highlighted the importance of the study tour in broadening the strategic outlook of NDC Course 33 participants and shared updates on the College’s growing role in Nigeria’s defence education and strategic policy development.
Course 33 participants in Brunei are focusing on the theme: “National Institutions and Economic Development in Brunei: Lessons for Nigeria.” Through engagements with key national institutions and subject-matter experts, the delegation seeks to distill practical insights applicable to Nigeria’s own developmental and security objectives.
Rear Admiral Olotu further described the strategic visit as reaffirmation of the NDC’s commitment to grooming leaders with a broad, global perspective “leaders who are well-equipped to contribute to Nigeria’s peace, security, and national development in an increasingly complex international environment.”
