Gov Otti Champions Strategic Leadership as “Lifeblood of Governance” at National Defence College

The Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti, has identified strategic leadership as the critical “life wire” of effective governance, capable of either building or marring the destiny of a nation. Governor Otti shared these insights on Thursday, January 29, 2026, while delivering a lecture titled “Strategic Leadership in Governance: My Political Experience” to participants of Course 34 at the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja.

Bridging Business Acumen and Political Strategy

Speaking as part of the college’s Module 5 lecture series, Dr Otti—a seasoned economist and former banking executive—offered a unique dual-perspective approach to leadership. He detailed how strategic vision and meticulous planning, hallmarks of the private sector, are indispensable tools for navigating the complexities of political governance. “Strategic level leadership is the engine room of any administration,” the Governor averred. “Our actions at this level dictate the trajectory of the state and the well-being of the people.”

Commendation for the NDC

Reflecting on his interactions with the participants during their state tour of Abia last year, Governor Otti lauded the NDC’s academic rigour and its ability to compete on a global scale.

Global Standard: He praised the college for maintaining a conducive learning environment.

Curriculum Excellence: He noted that the institution’s success is a testament to a well-designed curriculum that prepares senior officers for high-level strategic roles.

Call to Action: He urged the Course 34 nominees to maximize the opportunity to prepare for future positions of national responsibility.

A Tribute to the Armed Forces

Governor Otti also used the platform to express profound gratitude to the Nigerian Armed Forces for their role in stabilizing security within Abia State and across the federation. He specifically acknowledged the courage of personnel fighting terrorism, insurgency, and banditry. “Some of your colleagues have paid the ultimate price while discharging their constitutional mandate,” Otti remarked. “This remains the highest sacrifice one can offer to their country.”

In his response, the Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, thanked the Governor for his presence and described his leadership style in Abia State as a model for aspiring leaders to emulate.

The event concluded with a high-level interactive session between the Governor, the faculty, and the participants, followed by the presentation of a commemorative memento and a group photograph to mark the occasion.
