National Defence College Launches Strategic Defence and Security Management Course

The Commandant National Defence College (NDC) Rear Admiral OJ Okosun has inaugurated the Strategic Defence and Security Management Course (DSMC) 1, bringing together senior officers, security personnel, and partner institutions to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity in addressing complex security challenges.

In his opening remarks, the Deputy Commandant Major General KO Ukandu speaking on behalf of the Commandant (NDC) described the course as timely, given the nation’s evolving security landscape marked by terrorism, violent extremism, banditry, kidnapping, cyber threats, and climate-related risks.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s security challenges require more than kinetic responses, calling for collaborative action, strong leadership, effective policy direction, and integrated defence strategies. “This course provides an opportunity to deepen knowledge, sharpen leadership skills, and build networks that will endure beyond the classroom,” he said.

The Commandant commended the Provost of the Centre for Strategic Research and Studies, (CSRS) Professor Ahmed, and the Department of Defence and Security for organizing the programme. He also acknowledged the contributions of resource persons, noting their expertise would enrich discussions and fortify the nation’s security architecture.

Reaffirming the College’s mission to prepare strategic leaders for national, regional, and global engagement, he formally declared the course open and wished participants success in their deliberation.

In his remarks, the Provost CSRS, Professor Ahmed says that the Defence and Security Military Course  is designed to equip leaders  with the capacity to understand conflicts from multiple perspective particularly non- kinetic dimension.

He urged participant to return to their respected organisations well informed and apply the knowledge gained to make constructive and productive impacts and appreciated the Commandant for declaring the programme open as well as well as the mentors and resource persons for their contributions to the training.
