NDC Course 34 Delegation Explores Strategic Partnership with ISEDEF MAPUTO, Mozambique

In a significant move to bolster regional security cooperation and academic synergy, the Commandant of the National Defence College (NDC) Nigeria, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed leading a delegation of faculty members and participants of Course 34, paid a strategic visit to the Instituto Superior de Estudos de Defesa (ISEDEF) in Mozambique.

The visit, which forms a critical component of the Course 34 Regional Tour, underscores Nigeria’s commitment to fostering defence diplomacy and sharing tactical expertise across the African continent.

Strengthening the Pillars of Regional Security

During the high-level engagement, leadership from both institutions identified key thematic areas for immediate and long-term collaboration. The discussions centered on three vital pillars designed to address contemporary security challenges in the sub-region.

The Blue Economy: Recognizing the strategic importance of maritime security, both institutions pledged to collaborate on research and strategies to protect territorial waters, combat piracy, and harness marine resources sustainably.

Counter-Terrorism:  With both nations facing evolving asymmetric threats, the visit facilitated a robust exchange of ideas on intelligence sharing, de-radicalization programs, and joint counter-insurgency doctrines.

Student Exchange Programs: To foster cross-cultural understanding and professional networking among future military leaders, a framework for student and faculty exchange was proposed. This initiative aims to harmonize training standards and broaden the operational perspectives of officers.

A Commitment to Collective Defence: The Commandant emphasized that the challenges facing Africa require “African solutions birthed through intellectual rigor and institutional synergy.” He noted that ISEDEF remains a pivotal partner in the Southern African region, making it an ideal destination for Course 34 participants to gain firsthand insight into regional defence architecture.

“This visit is not merely a diplomatic gesture; it is a functional step toward a more integrated African defence education system. By aligning our curricula and research on the Blue Economy and Counter-Terrorism, we are building a formidable front against instability.”

The visit concluded with a tour of ISEDEF’s facilities and a symbolic exchange of souvenirs, marking the beginning of a renewed era of partnership between the two prestigious defence colleges. As Course 34 continues its regional tour, the insights gained in Maputo are expected to significantly enrich the participants’ final research findings and strategic outlooks.
