NDC Nigeria Course 34 Embarks on Regional Study Tour to Ghana; Strengthening West African Military Ties
In a significant move to bolster regional security cooperation and academic exchange, the Commandant of the National Defence College (NDC) Nigeria, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, led a high-powered delegation on a strategic Regional Study Tour to the Republic of Ghana.
The visit, part of the curriculum for participants of Course 34, underscored the long-standing defence relationship between the two West African powerhouses.

High-Level Engagements with Ghana’s Military Top Brass
The tour commenced with a series of high-profile courtesy visits to the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces. Rear Admiral Ahmed and his team were received by the Ghana Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong.
During these sessions, discussions cantered on:
Regional Security Architecture: Collaborative efforts to tackle maritime insecurity and transnational organized crime within the Gulf of Guinea.
Intelligence Sharing: Enhancing the synergy between the Nigerian and Ghanaian military wings to stay ahead of evolving regional threats.
Capacity Building: Exploring new avenues for joint training exercises and tactical exchanges.
“The security of our sub-region depends on the strength of our partnerships,” Rear Admiral Ahmed noted during the talks. “Course 34’s presence here is a testament to our commitment to a unified African defence strategy.”
A Sentimental Return to GAFCSC
A highlight of the tour was the visit to the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC). For Rear Admiral Ahmed, the visit was a homecoming, as he is a distinguished alumnus of the prestigious institution. The NDC Commandant met with the Commandant of GAFCSC, Major General Jackson Wonje, where they reviewed existing academic frameworks and shared perspectives on strategic military education.
The delegation conducted a comprehensive inspection of facilities, touring the lecture halls, simulation centres, and research libraries that continue to shape the next generation of African military leaders.
Strengthening Bonds through Tradition
In line with military tradition, the visits were marked by the exchange of souvenirs, symbolizing the mutual respect and enduring friendship between the two nations’ armed forces.
The engagements concluded with official group photographs, capturing a moment of solidarity between the NDC Nigeria delegation and their Ghanaian hosts. These visual records serve as a reminder of the “mutual and beneficial relationships” that the Regional Study Tour aims to cultivate.
Significance of the Tour: The Regional Study Tour is a critical component of the NDC Course 34 program. It provides participants—comprising senior officers and strategic leaders—with first-hand insight into the socio-political and security dynamics of neighboring countries, ensuring they are well-equipped for high-level command and policy formulation.
