Strategic Lenses Series 1: Security and National Development
Strategic Lenses Series 1 (2018) focuses on Security and National Development. In recent decades, insecurity has manifested in varying forms with attendant undesirable setbacks to development in Nigeria. Further, security challenges around Nigeria’s neighbourhood and in the wider sub-Saharan and Sahelian regions arising from political and socio-economic discontent have manifested in exacerbated security and developmental burdens to Nigeria. Whereas different explanations have been projected on the slow pace of development in Nigeria, it is apparent that meaningful development can only be achieved and sustained in a secured environment. This publication is therefore compelled by the ever-increasing need for a holistic and multidisciplinary approach towards addressing the multifaceted challenges of development from the backdrop of insecurity in Nigeria.
The book aggregates the relevant lectures delivered at the National Defence College by heads of governments, scholars, senior military officers as well as heads of ministries, departments and agencies as they seek to address critical issues in the socio-political economic and military dimensions of national security and development. It is divided into twelve chapters with focus on interrogation of the concept of the state and separation of powers, population demographics, democratic governance, economic growth and regional cooperation.
