Dambazau Call for Enhanced Relationship Between Security Operatives and The Public
The Honorable Minister of Interior, Lieutenant General Abdulrahamah Dambazau (rtd) has called for enhanced cordial relationship between all security operatives and their host communities as well as the public. He made this call while delivering a lecture to course 26 participants of National Defence College Nigeria entitled; Internal Security Architecture and National Security: Strategic Options to meet Emerging Challenges.
While delivering the lecture, General Dambazau explained that it is only when security agencies and the public maintain cordial relationship that the security operatives would be able to carry out their assigned responsibilities successfully as well as source any desired information from them for official use. “The relationship between the Police and the general public has to be positively enhanced because of the constant interface,” he said.

On the existing relationship among security operatives in the country, the Honorable Minister observed that creating cooperation between operatives is one of the major responsibilities of the office of the National Security adviser. In addition, he observed the need for relationship of mutual respects among the security operatives plus other Services. ‘’ This he said, will go a long way in stopping the occasional rivalry between some of the security agencies’’, he asserted.
However, Lieutenant General Dambazau buttressed that the best way to ensure amicable resolution of conflict in our societies is through provision of good governance and eradication of poverty. He then opined that good governance can only be realized through accountability, transparency and the adherence of the rule of law by all actors. “This is exactly what the present government is trying to ensure in all aspects”, he reiterated.

The Honourable Minister revealed that there is a distinction between winning the war and winning the peace. He emphasized that it was in this regard that the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Interior were working closely to ensure that the relevant security outfits take over a particular situation from the military in the North East to enable them move on with the operations as supposed. “I don’t see the reason why the military should be made to be guarding Internally Displaced Persons’ Camps, which is supposed to be the police responsibility”, he stated.
The Minister said that one of the possible strategic options to meet security challenges in Nigeria is security sector reform that would involve a total overhaul of the entire security sector. This he said could be achieved when security sector is held accountable and transparent in their respective dealings. He added that ‘’ we need a security sector that exhibits high professionalism; adequate training, well equipped and highest standard of welfare for its personnel’’. He further said that, we need a security sector that is well coordinated, that is not only amiable to collaboration and cooperation among the various agencies within, but also has the capacity to reach out to the public by way of strategic communication.
