Donation of Books and Material to National Defence College

The National Defence College Nigeria has received 139 Peace Support Operations books, reference materials, United Nations Handouts and folders from the wife of Late Major General Ishaya Isah Hassan. The donation was as a result of the will written by the Late Major General. The will directed the distribution of the aforementioned Peace Support Operations books to the National Defence College, on the demise of Major General Ishaya Hassan.

Late Major General Ishaya Hassan was the architect of the establishment of the departments of peacekeeping in the Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police. These departments were approved based on a position paper the Late General forwarded to the Ministry of Defence in 2003 when he was serving as a Defence Attaché in New York. The Late General was the Director of Peacekeeping (DPK) at the Army Headquarters, Chief of Staff African Standby Force at the Headquarters African Union Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. While serving in these offices, the Late General was able to collect these large volumes of works on Peace Support Operations and he wrote a will directing the donation to National Defence College Nigeria. It was the hope of the General while alive that these books, reference materials and United Nations handouts would serve to improve the wealth of knowledge of members of the Armed Forces and the generality of the populace. The presentation was done by Air Commodore RJ Peters and the son of the Late General to the National Defence College.

The Commandant, National Defence College, Rear Admiral Adeniyi Osinowo, while receiving the books on behalf of the College commended the decision of the Late General and stated that the will was one of its kinds in the history of the Nigerian Armed Forces. He therefore, advised military personnel to emulate the kind gesture of the Late General, so that knowledge gained by personnel while in Service will not get to extinction.
