NDC Conducts Regional Tour
The success story of the Nigerian unbroken democracy from 1999 till date has received admiration of the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic of The Gambia, His Excellency Adama Barrow. The President lauded Nigerian unbroken democratic transition and called on the people of Africa and the Gambia to learn from the Nigerian democratic experience. He made the call recently at the State House of Gambia in Banjul when the Commandant National Defence College (NDC), Nigeria, Rear Admiral MM Kadiri paid him a courtesy call along with Participants of NDC Course 28.
According to the President, ”Africa should learn from Nigeria and The Gambia should learn from Nigeria’s success in transitioning from military rule to democracy. Nigeria has succeeded in building a great democracy through building strong institutions and depoliticising the military.” He further noted that the diversity of the Corps of Participants in NDC reflects a steady approach to integration of the continent.
The visit was part of activities of the Regional Study Tour of the College for Participants of Course 28 which was conducted successfully recently. The Tour had 107 Participants of the Course divided into 5 Teams to visit 5 African countries from 9-15 February 2020. The Tour is an integral part of Module 5 of the Course Curriculum (International Affairs and Regional Studies) of the College envisioned to promote functional understanding of the regional environment for security and development.
The specific objectives of the tour were to facilitate participants’ understanding of specific contemporary themes of security and development in various countries visited; Enable Participants to analyze the dynamics of geopolitical relationship especially as it relates to relations of the country visited with Nigeria; Enhanced Participants’ understanding of international politics and how it impacts on the nation visited; Broaden Participants’ appreciation of crucial issues of geopolitical, social and economic importance on the global scene and how these impact on Nigeria’s national security and development; Draw lessons for Nigeria security and development. The countries visited were Benin Republic, Senegal, Cote d’lvoire, Ghana and The Gambia.
