NDC to Host Senior Mission Leaders Course

Course Description

The dynamic nature of contemporary conflicts in Africa continues to pose a challenge for the management of Peace Support Operations (PSO). The UN, AU and other regional organizations have identified leadership capability as very vital to the success of any mission. The development of leadership capacity is therefore key to achieving this aim. the Senior Mission Leaders Course (SMLC) is tailored to address the capacity gap in mission leadership and management within the ECOWAS planning element for the three components (Military, Police and Civilian) and other personnel in leadership position within the ECOWAS Commission.

This Course provides the gateway to multi-faceted and multi-dimensional PSO and therefore the model for training mission leaders and planners at the strategic level. It is targeted at management level personnel who are planning, going or likely to hold management positions in a mission.

This Course is focused on enhancing the capacity of the ECOWAS management level staff. It is also designed to prepare the participants in enabling them play their respective roles successfully in Contemporary PSOs’.

Participants

The Course targets 24 participants made up senior level military, police and civilian personnel from the ECOWAS Commission and West African Region representing candidates who will be involved in planning a mission and who are eligible for deployment for the position of Special Representative of the President of the Commission (SRPC), Force Commander (FC), and Police Commissioner (PC) in any fielded peace mission.

Objectives

The Course aims to:

  • Equip the participants in understanding the importance of Cooperation, Communication, Consensus and Integration required for effective functioning of the Senior Leadership Team;
  • provide an understanding and awareness of the capabilities and limitations of the various components of peacekeeping operations;
  • provide an understanding of the working systems of ECOWAS/AU / UN and various agencies in the field as they relate to strategic coordination;

Language of Instruction: English with Simultaneous interpretation in French
