Freedom C. Onuoha

 

 

Dr Freedom C Onuoha hails from Umuawa-Alaocha, in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.  He had his primary education at Enugu Road Primary School, Nsukka, and his secondary education at Boys Secondary School, Nru, Nsukka, both in Enugu State, Nigeria.

 

 

 

He received his B.Sc (Political Science) in 2000; M.Sc (Political Economy) in 2007; and PhD (Political Economy) 2013, all from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Dr Onuoha joined the Centre for Strategic Research and Studies (CSRS), National Defence College, 2006. In January 2014, he was appointed the Head of Department, Conflict, Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Studies, at the CSRS. He is currently a participant of National Defence College Course 23.

 

 

 

In November 2010, he was among 17 young policy analysts from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, selected and trained by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung on Understanding the United Nations, during its fifth Fall Academy for Young Policy Analysts. In 2010 and 2011, he was among over 10,000 experienced academics and experts from 130 countries selected by the Thomson Reuters Global Institutional Profiles Project to participate in the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the 2010 and 2011 ranking of the top Universities across the globe.

 

 

 

His broad research interests centre on conflicts, security studies, climate change and development studies, with particular focus on human security. He is regularly invited to give speeches and lectures in the US, Europe and other countries on terrorism, extremist movements, maritime security and organised crime, among others. Dr Onuoha has equally participated in several local and international conferences, roundtables, seminars and workshops. He consults for reputable international and national organisations such as the Al Jazeera Centre for Studies, Qatar; Institute for Security Studies, South Africa; and CLEEN Foundation, Nigeria, among others.

 

 

 

Dr Onuoha has contributed several dozen articles and essays in both reputable local and international journals and books, encompassing a wide variety of subjects such as piracy, terrorism, militias, religious extremism, disasters, gender, small arms proliferation, and organized crimes, among others.

 

 

 

He is a member of various professional bodies such as the Nigerian Political Science Association, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, and American Political Science Association. He is also a member of the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

 

 

 

Dr Onuoha is happily married and blessed with three children. His hobbies include listening to music, reading and debate.
